Election 07

On the back of a big voter swing towards the Australian Greens, and the significance of environmental policy as an election topic, I'd just like to pat myself on the back: evidently my views on how to vote sway the electorate.

In all seriousness, though (which is something rare for this site), I would like to thank every Australian who went and voted last Saturday. I don't care for whom, or even if it was valid, just that you participated in the electoral process. Unless you live in the electorate of Menzies and voted for Kevin Andrews, in which case I hope you cut yourself on the ballot paper. In the webbing between the fingers, where it really smarts!

On the other hand, little Johnny Beetlebrows got turfed, the Greens hold the balance of power in the Senate, the whackjob parties didn't get too much of a vote, and Smirky McSmirk Smirk's rejection of the leadership has plunged the Libs into disarray. Though I admire and respect the man for his contribution Australia economic prosperity, I don't think he would have a made a very good leader.

If "our Kev" will be much better remains to be seen, but it's well known that many (if not most) elections are decided by people voting against a political party rather than for another.

I've heard the campaign was a bit strenuous towards the end for the public, and I can well believe it. Luckily, not being in Australia inured me to the saturation coverage and allowed me to pick and choose the morsels of press to consume. Delving into Crikey's coverage a few days ago, I really had flashes of "The West Wing" as I read through the blow-by-blow accounts of the campaign. Is it too late to change degrees and start studying politics?

Which reminds me of the wonderful response given by a politics student when asked whether he was going to become a politician: "Do engineers become machines?"
