My local soccer club - the Eltham Eagles - had their presentation evening last night. All the underage teams - U9's to U17's - received trophies, and the two Senior sides got nifty pens. Blue this year, rather than the black of last. If this keeps going they may become a collectible item.
There seemed to be an inverse relationship between the age of the players and the likelihood of them being there to collect their trophies. One of the U17 teams had only four players show up, and the poor MC read out the names of a good half-dozen absentees in a row, each to diminishing applause. When a player finally made it on stage, the audience almost forgot to clap him; several younger kids had interepreted the empty stage as a sign that it was time to go home, or at the very least sample the plates of food waiting in the foyer.
My senior side had just under half our players in attendance, and most of those were there in some coaching or organisatory capacity anyway; the only team members there who didn't get two trophies were our keeper and left-back. Our sweeper got the biggest award of all: a giant cup for Administration, of all things. It served as a useful store for the rest of the awards his kids got.
Best and Fairest from our team went to our captain, which was no suprise. He won the B&F in our Division last year, so was a shoe-in for our club award, but apparently I polled a fair number of votes. Which was nice :-)
Maybe I should drop down a division to the side Paul plays in, just to improve my chances. I wouldn't be without precedent; our sweeper's son stayed in U9's for three years until he won best and fairest. Nepotism at it's best ;-)
Last match of the season kicks off in 3 hours, and we're playing for fourth place in the 2nd Division. We could come as high as second, or as low as sixth. Neither is very likely, nor desirable; anything higher than third place and we get promoted, which would make for a tough season next year. I'd think I'd struggle to score even my usual one goal per season (two this year!) up there.
